The new year is also a great time to see what college scholarships are available for college bound students. While the winter break brings a much needed rest after another grueling semester, it is also wise to use this time to look at and apply for scholarships, with quite a number being available with deadlines in the month of January.

For high school seniors who are possibly capping off their enrollment for college or college admissions application, winter break is a good time to look for additional student financial aid in the form of scholarships. Even high school juniors can begin looking at scholarships as early as January. 

15 College Bound Scholarships with Deadlines on January

To make things easier, we've compiled a list of 15 January Scholarships by deadline below. These are all college bound scholarships and arranged by date starting from January 1, 2022.

Award Amount:  $1,000

Deadline: January 1, 2022

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) THINK Scholars Program is an educational outreach initiative that promotes science, technology, engineering, and mathematics by supporting and funding projects developed by high school students.

This is open to all current students of high school residing in the United States. Students can apply to the program by submitting a proposal for any novel science, technology, or engineering idea. Selected finalists will be given $1,000 in funding for their project and may be invited to a 4-day all expense paid trip to MIT's campus.

Award Amount:  $2,500

Deadline: January 2, 2022

The Army Women's Foundation Legacy Scholarship Program offers financial support in four areas: Certificate programs, Community College coursework, Undergraduate Degrees, and Graduate Degrees.

Women must have served or are serving honorably in the U.S. Army, U.S. Army Reserve, Army National Guard or are the child of a woman who served honorably in the U.S. Army, U.S. Army Reserve or Army National Guard.

Award Amount:  $20,000

Deadline: January 5, 2022

Eligible students are guaranteed a minimum merit scholarship of $5,000 per year in renewable scholarships for up to four years, and have the opportunity to compete for a Presidential Scholarship. This competitive scholarship provides full tuition, fees and on-campus room and board, along with a book stipend, for up to four years. Approximately 10 students will receive this award each year.

To be eligible for this scholarship program, the applicant must be an incoming college freshman, have full-time enrollment, have domestic residency, and have at least a 3.8 GPA. For renewable eligibility, the student must maintain full-time enrollment and a 3.3 GPA.

Award Amount:  $40,000 ($10,000 per year renewable up to 4 years)

Deadline: January 6, 2022

The GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program rewards college-bound students who demonstrate exemplary leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship with financial assistance to pursue higher education. Eligible applicants must: be US citizens; have a 3.0 GPA; be current high school seniors attending high school in the United States (students living on U.S. Armed Forces base and home-schooled students are also eligible); and, plan to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study toward a bachelor’s degree at an accredited four-year college or university in the United States for the entire upcoming academic year.

Selected recipients will receive $10,000 in renewable scholarships for up to an additional three years – that means a total of up to $40,000 per recipient. Awards are for undergraduate study and may be used for education-related expenses, including tuition, fees, books, supplies, room, and board. In addition, Scholars are invited to participate in a special awards program and receive ongoing leadership-development support.

The Ron Brown Scholar Program (RBSP) honors the legacy of Ronald H. Brown through a selective scholarship program that advances higher education for community-minded and intellectually gifted African Americans.

RBSP competitively awards 45-50 four-year $40,000 scholarships ($10,000 each year) to the most talented and economically-challenged high school seniors who demonstrate a keen interest in public service, community engagement, business entrepreneurship and global citizenship. Applicants must excel academically, exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need.  

Recipients may use the renewable scholarships to attend an accredited four-year college or university of their choice within the United States.  

To be eligible, applicants must be Black/African American, US citizens or a permanent resident of the United States, and a current high school senior at the time of their application. 

Award Amount:  $30,000

Deadline: January 12, 2022

To be eligible for the Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship, the applicant must be a minority high school senior who is graduating and is a citizen of the United States; present evidence of financial need; demonstrate a record of academic excellence, leadership potential and a dedication to community service; submit an official SAT and/or ACT test exam score from junior or senior year; plan to attend an accredited and approved 4-year college within the United States or affiliated with a United States-based college or university; and not possess a degree from, or be enrolled in, a 2 or 4–year college when applying.

Award Amount:  $1,500

Deadline: January 14, 2022

Applicants must be high school seniors (public, private or home-schooled) or be current full-time college students (minimum of 12 credit hours); be planning to pursue and agricultural-related degree; have a 2.5 GPA; and, obtain no less than two electronic endorsements from qualifying farmers who live or farm in an eligible county.

Deadline: January 18, 2022

The Des Moines Women’s Club Literature Scholarship is open to registered students or residents of central Iowa (Polk, Boone, Dallas, Jasper, Madison, Marion, Story, or Warren Counties) and is awarded to a graduating high school senior of any gender pursuing a degree in Language and Literature, Language Arts, Journalism, Writing or Language Education.

Deadline: January 24, 2022

The Quad City Engineering and Science Council with its member societies, local businesses, and regional universities annually provide one-time scholarships to high school seniors studying STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) at an accredited four-year college or university.

Applicants must be a Quad City area resident in the Illinois Counties of Carroll, Henry, Knox, Lee, Mercer, Rock Island, or Whiteside, or in the Iowa Counties of Clinton, Scott, Muscatine, or Louisa.

Award Amount:  Varies

Deadline: January 27, 2022

Applicants must be either high school seniors, or undergraduate, graduate or community college students, who identify as a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer.

Applicants must plan on attending college/university full-time.

Award Amount:  Varies

Deadline: January 28, 2022

The McKinstry Scholarship, which awards up to full tuition and half of on-campus room and board costs, is available to high school seniors who are interested in the study of Biology or Pre-Medicine at Penn State's University Park campus and who are identified as having high financial need as determined by their FAFSA form.

The scholarship is renewable for up to four years or until the student has earned 130 Penn State credits.

The 2021 Anhelo Project Dream Scholarship will be awarded to eligible high school seniors, undergraduate students, graduate students and/or vocational training students who demonstrate leadership, academic competitiveness, community involvement, and financial need.

To be eligible, the applicant should be an Illinois resident attending a high school, college, university or vocational training program located within the State of Illinois. The applicant must also be enrolled full-time for the Spring 2021/Fall 2021 semester at an accredited college, university or vocational training program located in the State of Illinois. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and commit to 20 hours of volunteer time to the Anhelo Project events during the school year.  

Holders of F-1 student visas and international students are not eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Deadline: January 30, 2022

Applicants must be living in the United States, Canada or Puerto Rico, are graduating high school seniors and plan to enroll full-time, without interruption, for an entire academic year at an accredited two or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school in the U.S., Canada or Puerto Rico. The student must have a cumulative high school grade point average of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale, or the equivalent.

Deadline: January 31, 2022

These scholarships are available to graduating high school seniors from a 14-county area of North Carolina. Applicants must demonstrate financial need; plan to enroll as a full-time student in a degree program at N.C. State University, UNC-Chapel Hill, or UNC-Greensboro; currently reside and attend high school in Alamance, Bertie, Caswell, Durham, Forsyth, Granville, Guilford, Orange, Person, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, Swain, or Warren counties.

Brooks Scholars may receive additional funding for summer internships, research or travel abroad, and a one-time computer stipend of $2,500. The scholarship is renewable, provided the recipient has continued financial need, remains enrolled full-time at an eligible institution, maintains a 2.75 cumulative grade point average and good citizenship.

Award Amount:  $20,000

Deadline: January 31, 2022

Applicants must have received a cancer diagnosis at any point in the past, plan to attend a U.S. college or graduate school, and have a family income of less than $150,000 per year.

This scholarship was established in the loving memory of Dan X. Wray, the founder of Biofilm. He was a man that built an incredibly successful professional career out of big ideas and even bigger dreams. To apply, you tell them about your “BIG DREAM” and how you plan to use your college education to make that a reality.  

This scholarship is open to applicants either from or attending school in Southern California, either from or attending school in Nevada, or attending school at Arizona State University.
